June 2022 Attorney of the Month

Rachel Benedict

Why did you take a KIND case?

I love taking SIJS cases because I really enjoy working with children and watching them grow up as they progress throughout their cases. I love taking pro bono cases with KIND in particular because they provide invaluable technical support with cases, and also provide clients with other types of support (referrals to social services, etc.) that I cannot always provide.

What would you tell other attorneys to encourage them to take a KIND case?

Do it! Even if you are afraid and have never taken an immigration case before. The fabulous staff at KIND will provide you with the guidance that you need every step of the way. And you will have the ability to make a real difference in the life of an immigrant child.

Do you have any advice for a new attorney taking their first pro bono case?

Try to use simple, age-appropriate language when communicating with your client and also check in frequently to make sure that he/she/they are following you.
