How You Can Help Separated Families and Ensure Protection for Children

June 28, 2019

Every single day immigrant families are being separated across the United States, inflicting deep traumas on migrant and refugee children and significantly damaging their development and well-being. KIND is working tirelessly to put an end to this inhumane practice, but we need your help! Here’s what you can do to say families must stay together and help end family separation.

STEP 1: SPEAK OUT

Sign Our Petition

To show the level of collective outrage over this injustice, KIND has partnered with Change.org to demand the Trump administration end long-term, indefinite detention of immigrant children. Take just 5 seconds to add your name and take a stand for migrant children.

STEP 3: SUSTAIN THE CAUSE

Give What You Can

Children are being separated from their families, forced to live in detention centers for months at a time in horrible conditions, and often sent to court all on their own. Every dollar you give can help these vulnerable children access legal representation in their deportation proceedings and ultimately to safety.

Every single dollar makes a difference – please give what you can, and together we can protect these children!

STEP 4: EDUCATE YOURSELF

Learn about the Policies that Protect Refugee Children

Educating ourselves on key policies that will ensure fair and just treatment of migrant children is one of the biggest steps we can take toward advocating for migrant and refugee children. Many of these policies can help address core systemic causes of large scale migration as well as mass cruelty and neglect against these children. KIND is currently advocating for the following pieces of legislation.

STEP 5: STAND FOR CHANGE

Call Your Representative

The most impactful way you can help advocate for cause sweeping, large-scale change for migrant children is by calling your representative and urging them to support the policies we outlined above. But while we can provide them, your voice is the one and only way we can ensure they hear them!

When you call, you can use the following talking points:

  • Do not trade family separation with unlimited family detention and lack of due process. Demand that President Trump end all family separation and detention through social media, letters, appropriations, and in Congressional hearings
  • Support efforts to defund family separation in appropriations and decrease funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices within the Department of Justice
  • Urge your Member of Congress to co-sponsor the policies we outlined above
