Ruling on Border Expulsions is a Victory for Child Refugees and U.S. Commitment to Protecting the Most Vulnerable

Today in response to a D.C. District Court ruling that excludes children from the Trump Administration’s Title 42 expulsions at the U.S.-Mexico border, Kids in Need of Defense President Wendy Young issued the following statement:

“Today’s D.C. District Court ruling that prevents children seeking safety in the United States from being turned back at the U.S.-Mexico border before they have a chance to make their claim for protection is a victory for the rule of law, restoring vital protections and procedures eviscerated by the current administration. The ruling makes clear that the Trump Administration illegally used the COVID-19 pandemic as cover to carry out its anti-immigration agenda and to circumvent domestic and international law. This policy is counter to our nation’s longstanding commitment to protecting refugees, including unaccompanied kids on the move, and the court rightly enjoined it. The United States is capable of determining the protection needs of these children while at the same time addressing public health concerns.”

Fallo Sobre Expulsiones en la Frontera es una Victoria para Niños Refugiados y el Compromiso de los Estados Unidos a Proteger los Mas Vulnerables

Hoy en respuesta al fallo de la corte distrital de D.C. de excluir a menores migrantes de las expulsiones por parte de la Administración Trump bajo Título 42, la Presidenta de Kids in Need of Defense emite lo siguiente:

“El fallo hoy por parte de la corte distrital de D.C. que impide que los menores migrantes en busca de asilo en los Estados Unidos sean rechazados en la frontera de los Estados Unidos y México antes de que tengan la oportunidad de solicitar su petición de asilo, es una victoria para el Estado de derecho, restaurando protecciones y proceses vitales que habían sido aniquilados por la administración actual. El fallo hace claro que la Administración Trump uso ilegalmente la pandemia COVID-19 como excusa para llevar a cabo su agenda anti-inmigracion y de eludir las leyes domesticas e internacionales. Esta política es contraria a nuestro compromiso de proteger a refugiados, incluyendo menores migrantes no acompañados. Los Estados Unidos es capaz de determinar las necesidades de protección de estos menores mientras a la vez abordar temas de seguridad pública.”
