KIND Decries Plan to Temporarily Suspend Immigration

April 21, 2020

Washington, DC – In response to President Donald J. Trump’s late-night Tweet announcing that he will sign an Executive Order to temporarily suspend all immigration to the United States, Kids in Need of Defense’s (KIND) President Wendy Young issued the following statement:

“President Trump’s decision to pin this pandemic’s economic impact on immigrants and use the COVID-19 crisis as cover to close U.S. borders is shameful and un-American. Immigrants are critical to the foundation of our economy, and many – including unaccompanied children – come here seeking protection from grave dangers and a fair chance to contribute to our great nation. This planned Executive Order is the culmination of his administration’s sustained effort to stoke fear and anger toward immigrants. It is in no way rooted in the law or in reality. It will not make us safer, but rather result in limiting resources we need to fight this pandemic and keep U.S. citizens needlessly separated from their family members. He is seeking to dim our shining light on the hill, and the American people should come together to ensure it remains a bright beacon of hope for the world.”
