From Refugee to Role Model: Abdirahman’s Journey to Success

A New Beginning

At the age of 17, Abdirahman left behind the turmoil of his homeland in Somalia, embarking on a brave journey to the United States. Seeking safety and a brighter future, he arrived in Seattle, where his new life began in a government shelter. Surrounded by young people from across the globe, Abdirahman started to build his future, one step at a time.

Building a Future and Embracing Family Life

Three years into his new life in America, Abdirahman met his future wife at community college. They married and now have three children, two girls and a boy. Reflecting on his journey, he marvels at how far he has come. “When I arrived in the United States, I had no idea what would happen to me, but I had a good hope that I could have a nice life. And finally, the dream came true,” he shares.

Abdirahman’s aspirations extend beyond personal success. He envisions a future where he owns a business and supports his wife in her educational pursuits. “One of the things I need is to help my wife go back to school,” he says. “So we can be a family of businessman, father, and educated mom. That’s the plan.”

Despite the challenges, Abdirahman finds joy in his family life. His mornings are brightened by his young daughter’s simple question: “Daddy, why are you going?” His heartfelt response, “Because I need to work and pay our bills,” is met with her cheerful reply, “Ok, bye, see you later!” The love and support from his children make the long days worth it.

Abdirahman acknowledges the profound impact of KIND and its attorneys on his life. “Literally, I couldn’t imagine…Without them…everything would be harder,” he says. His journey from a refugee to a role model serves as an inspiration and a call to action for those in a position to offer support.
