Murals are important, but greater transformations are necessary

July 5, 2024

Tapachula, Mexico – Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), an international nonprofit organization committed to protecting the rights of unaccompanied migrant children and their families, was invited to attend the inauguration of the restructuring of the Siglo XXI Migratory Station. During the facility tour, KIND staff observed the different murals created by the MIgraArt initiative and observed facility remodeling and improvement efforts.  In response to this event, KIND Vice President and Country Director for Mexico Alejandra Macias Delgadillo issued the following statement:

“KIND recognizes these important efforts to improve the conditions and treatment of migrants in the custody of the Mexican government. These efforts should be the prelude to more comprehensive transformations that ensure the rights, welfare, and safety of migrants, especially the prevention of family separation. It is important to move toward alternatives to detention for this vulnerable population. KIND will always support reforms and improvements that protect children and families  from the harms and risks of immigration detention. We hope the improvements we saw during this tour are the beginning of more transformations designed to put the needs and care of children and families at the center of migration policy and practices.”
