KIND Praises Administration Steps to Ensure Family Unity, Legal Access for Latino Families

July 18, 2024

Washington, D.C. Today, as part of its announcement of steps to expand opportunities for Latino communities, the Biden Administration announced new initiatives to expand access to legal representation for those appearing in immigration court, including expanding an Attorney of the Day program to additional cities and a new call to action for members of the legal community to make commitments of pro bono support to those who are unrepresented in immigration court. In response, KIND President Wendy Young issued the following statement:

“Today’s announcement reflects the importance of pro bono legal representation for those navigating our nation’s complex immigration court system, including unaccompanied children. Access to legal counsel ensures the most vulnerable among us have the opportunity to receive fair and comprehensive consideration of their claims for protection. KIND is encouraged by today’s announcement and will continue to engage an ever-growing number of pro bono counsel from law firms, law schools, corporations, and other key partners committed to ensuring no unaccompanied child appears in immigration court alone. The Administration’s commitment to expand Attorney of the Day programs will increase vital legal assistance for those who do not have representation. We also praise the Administration’s work to prioritize family unification programs that benefit the safety and well-being of children.”
