KIND Applauds Vice President-Elect Harris’s Assertion that Biden Administration
Will Ensure Legal Counsel for Immigrant and Refugee Children
Washington, DC— Following Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris’s January 12, 2021 statement to Univision noting that, “We’re going to ensure that children who arrive at the border have legal counsel, legal representation so we can make sure they receive due process and they’re treated fairly,” KIND President Wendy Young issued the following statement:
“Vice President-Elect Harris’s statement is a welcome recognition that representation is vital for children seeking safety in the United States. Without an attorney, they cannot make their case for U.S. protection and can then be sent back to the life-threatening danger that pushed them to take the dangerous journey to the United States alone.
“Vice-President-Elect Harris is confirming that the Biden Administration will finally and fully confront the systemic due process failure that unaccompanied children face in the U.S. immigration system and will provide these particularly vulnerable children a fair chance to remain safely in the United States and live out a childhood free from fear.”
