U.S. and EU Protection of Ukrainians Exemplifies Strong Leadership and Compassion

March 4, 2022

Washington, DCKIND applauds the Biden Administration for granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Ukrainians in the United States, and the European Union for activating its Temporary Protection Directive to provide safety to refugees fleeing Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainians in the United States urgently need this relief as they witness the violence that their families and friends are facing at home. The EU’s historic action will provide relief to millions of Ukrainian refugees, comprised mostly of women and children, and alleviate unfathomable suffering. KIND President Wendy Young issued the following statement:

KIND welcomes the Biden Administration and EU’s actions which embody significant global leadership and great compassion. These responses will save lives and provide support to millions who desperately need the world’s help during this horrific time,” said KIND President Wendy Young. “The Biden Administration is proving its commitment to the protection of the most vulnerable while the EU’s action is an exemplary model of burden-sharing. The U.S. and EU responses are striking examples of how we can come together for the greatest of causes – the protection of human life and well-being.

As in most wars, children are the most vulnerable, and many become separated from their parents and caregivers in often tragic circumstances. EU Member States must ensure the protection of unaccompanied children and their identification for future reunification. Children will also need legal assistance to help them fully access safety. In some cases, children may be best served by relocation. Member States should ensure that the best interests of the child guide their decision-making in these instances while also acting to ensure children swiftly can reach family and get the support they need

The global community is proving that it can unite to embrace the protection of the most vulnerable and rise to one of the most urgent challenges of our times.”
