Washington, DC – Today, just weeks ahead of #BitcoinTuesday on Dec. 3, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) announced that its supporters can now donate to the organization’s vital mission through cryptocurrencies. KIND’s online giving platform now accepts Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Litecoin (LTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Zcash (ZEC), Basic Attention Token (BAT), Chainlink (LINK), and Gemini Dollar (GUSD).
The U.S. Internal Revenue Service classifies these cryptocurrency donations to support KIND’s work to protect unaccompanied migrant children as property, meaning they are not subject to capital gains tax and are tax deductible on the donor’s tax returns. KIND added this feature in collaboration with The Giving Block, leaders in equipping nonprofits with the tools and techniques to effectively fundraise with cryptocurrency.
“Since we opened our doors more than a decade ago, KIND has used innovative approaches across its work to protect unaccompanied children on the move,” said KIND President Wendy Young. “As our clients face sustained attacks that undermine their ability to seek safety in the United States and to secure protection through our nation’s immigration courts, KIND will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to help them. Our decision to accept cryptocurrencies is the latest example of this commitment to harnessing the powers of technology and innovation to protect the kids we serve.”
KIND deploys a comprehensive approach within its work to address the multi-faceted needs of unaccompanied migrant children. Not only do children come to KIND in need of legal services, but also often with deep traumas caused by the violence and fear experienced during their forced migration. Through legal services, social services, research and advocacy, the organization works to meet the holistic needs of its clients. In collaboration with 674 law firms, corporations, law schools, and associations, KIND has connected its clients with more than $450 million in pro bono legal services since 2009. More than 20,400 children have been referred to KIND since it opened its doors.
