On January 20, 2021, the Biden Administration inherited a U.S. protection system for unaccompanied children greatly weakened by the prior Administration. Two years later, amid operational challenges posed by this diminished infrastructure, combined with ongoing high numbers of unaccompanied children arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, the Biden Administration’s policies concerning this vulnerable population present a distinctly mixed record. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) assesses the Administration’s progress in protecting the welfare of unaccompanied children as measured by key objectives outlined.
