The Coming of Age of Unaccompanied Foreign Minors in Six European Countries

Legal Challenges for Unaccompanied Youth Turning 18

The transition to adulthood represents a crucial moment in the lives of unaccompanied children, often marked by uncertainty and vulnerability. The forms of protection guaranteed during childhood either cease or change radically, leaving many young people without adequate support at a key stage in their path toward integration and independence. This fact sheet presents research carried out as part of the European project My Coming of Age Story (CO.A.ST), conducted in six European countries: Slovakia, Poland, Slovenia, Italy, Greece and France. It explores how each national system supports unaccompanied minors during their critical transition to adulthood.

CO.A.ST is a collaborative, EU co-funded project to build the capacity of guardians to support and empower unaccompanied children as they transition to adulthood, including through training and the provision of legal and psychosocial support.
