Public Support for Legal Representation of Unaccompanied Children

A national survey conducted in October 2021 by Hart Research Associates revealed resounding public support for measures that would ensure legal representation of unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings. As detailed in the Hart Research memo describing the survey results, the polling found, among other things, that:

  • 77% of the American public believe that unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings who cannot afford legal representation should be provided with it; and

  • 75% of the American public support the proposal to provide legal representation to all unaccompanied children in immigration proceedings.

These findings demonstrate decisive backing throughout the United States and across ideological and partisan lines for legislative proposals and administrative actions that would ensure that no unaccompanied child faces immigration court alone.
