Protecting Unaccompanied Children Throughout Their Journey to Safety

As the Trump Administration seeks to carry out the mass, forced return of Guatemalan and Honduran children in U.S. custody, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is concerned that the effort both endangers children and sidesteps existing laws designed to protect them. Many of these children fled violence, human trafficking, abuse, persecution, discrimination, and other grave harm in their countries of origin and fear return to these same dangers. A federal court order establishing a temporary restraining order to block the administration’s plan to return 600 children to Guatemala noted that under longstanding anti-trafficking laws, these children must receive a full and fair opportunity to pursue humanitarian protection in the United States.
