Legal regulations for children who came to Poland from Ukraine have recently changed

PESEL UKR STATUS

A PESEL number is your personal number, which is needed for many things. With this number:

  • You can continue to live in Poland
  • You can go to school
  • You can use the help of a doctor

To continue to be able to do these things from September 1st 2026, all people living in Poland from Ukraine must have a valid PESEL number with UKR status and updated personal details.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

Check online or at your local government office:

  • That you have a valid PESEL number with UKR status
  • That you have a valid travel/identity document (e.g. passport)
  • That your details at the local government office are up to date

To continue to be able to do these things from September 1st 2026, all people living in Poland from Ukraine must have a valid PESEL number with UKR status and updated personal details.

Get Help

It is important that you check to make sure you have a valid and up-to-date PESEL with UKR status.

  • Tell the adult “I’m not sure if my UKR status is still valid.”
  • Remember that you can ask for help from an organization or a lawyer at any time.

The most important thing that you need is an identity document with a photo:

  • If you don’t have one, ask your parent or temporary guardian to help you get this document.
  • This could be a passport or another identity document.
  • The Ukrainian Consulate in Poland will be able to help.
  • Ask your parent or temporary guardian to apply for this number at your local government office
  • The official will update your details (they may ask for fingerprints and a signature)
  • Ask your parent or guardian to apply for a PESEL number with temporary UKR status at your local government office.
