Creating a Transnational Child Protection Case-Based Workshop

Transnational child protection cases are becoming more commonplace across Europe and are increasing in their complexity. This is especially true in the context of large-scale displacement crises, including that triggered by the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation of Ukraine in February 2022. For the past four years, children and young people displaced by the war have moved through multiple jurisdictions and child protection systems. Their cases therefore rarely sit neatly within one discipline’s mandate or one country’s procedures. For this reason, coordinated action is required across borders and disciplines. But while the need for such action is clear, in practice it is still often absent or fragmented. Case-based workshops can help to simulate transnational child protection case management scenarios that provide an opportunity to practice skills and develop cross-sector and cross jurisdictional ties that are essential to such case management.
