Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is committed to protecting the rights and well-being of unaccompanied children, including those entering the workforce for the first time. Labor Day is a reminder of workers’ struggles and sacrifices since the late 19th century to secure fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable hours. These hard-won protections extend to young workers, who by law cannot be asked to perform dangerous jobs, must have limits on the hours they can work, and have the right to be paid fairly. However, too often, young people—especially immigrant and unaccompanied children—are targeted for unsafe jobs, scams, or exploitation because of their vulnerability.
To help address these risks, KIND recently launched a new series of Know Your Rights videos that give young workers the tools they need to stay safe and informed when looking for employment. They are part of KIND’s Labor Exploitation Prevention Programs (LEPP) to help prevent labor exploitation among unaccompanied children and youth.
Unfortunately, many young workers are unaware of these rights. KIND’s new videos highlight key protections and practical tips to avoid exploitation. For example, they explain warning signs of job scams—such as recruiters asking for money, gift cards, or personal information—and emphasize that no employer should pressure a minor to work in hazardous conditions like roofing or operating machinery. The videos also encourage youth to seek guidance from trusted adults if they are uncertain about a job offer.
In addition to the videos, KIND’s LEPP created a variety of tools to educate and empower young workers to learn their rights in the workplace and how to recognize exploitative practices. LEPP offers resources including short, animated films, printed materials in 16 languages, and audio files, and support to ensure that vulnerable youth are informed and protected as they navigate the workforce.
As we celebrate Labor Day, KIND reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that all children—regardless of their background—have the knowledge and support they need to thrive and be safe at work and beyond.
